Workshop Explores Urban Agriculture as a New Pathway for Sustainable Local Development

21, Oct 2025

APLA organized a specialized workshop on urban agriculture and the role of local governments in integrating it into urban development plans, as part of the project “Empowering Palestinian Communities to Utilize Sustainable Development Opportunities”, funded by the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel in Palestine).

The workshop served as a joint reflection space, bringing together representatives from 27 local authorities across various governorates to discuss the concept of urban agriculture as a planning and development tool that strengthens food security, environmental awareness, and the human–city connection. The program introduced participants to key concepts, models, and global trends in urban agriculture, while also reviewing international experiences alongside the emerging Palestinian context, identifying potential policies and opportunities to expand local practices.

Through interactive group sessions, participants analyzed the roles of local governments in promoting urban agriculture and developed a set of local initiatives and practical recommendations to integrate these practices into Palestinian cities. The workshop opened a wider discussion on how to translate environmental concepts into actionable local policies, enhancing the capacity of Palestinian cities to address climate and food security challenges through a more sustainable and equitable development approach.
