As part of its ongoing efforts to advance sustainable development and strengthen the role of Palestinian local authorities, APLA has launched a specialized SDG Taskforce composed of selected staff members from municipalities working in planning, financial management, and public relations. The initiative aims to integrate the 2030 Agenda into local development plans and coordinate efforts to enhance the quality and efficiency of municipal services.
Dr. Ahmed Jaber, Projects Officer at APLA, explained that the SDG Taskforce will focus on developing innovative development strategies and providing technical support to address challenges faced by local governments in achieving the SDGs. The taskforce will coordinate efforts among municipalities and serve as a collaborative platform connecting them with civil society organizations and academic institutions to address local development issues. It will also work to strengthen monitoring and reporting mechanisms on progress toward SDG implementation.
APLA announced that the taskforce will begin its first activities with a comprehensive training program scheduled for later this month. The program is designed to build the team’s expertise and certify its members as trainers specialized in SDG localization, covering areas such as sustainable planning, data management, and performance indicator analysis. The training will be based on a comprehensive guide developed by APLA to ensure professional knowledge transfer and enhance participants’ ability to apply SDG concepts in practice.
The taskforce’s introductory meeting featured interactive discussions led by consultant Marwan Derzi, exploring best practices and achievements that could be adopted by local authorities, identifying priority SDGs for each municipality, and assessing key challenges to integrating the goals into local policies and programs.
The first meeting of the SDG Taskforce was held under the “Empowering Palestinian Communities to Utilize Sustainable Development Opportunities” project, implemented by APLA with the support of the Local Governance Reform Program (ENABEL). The initiative seeks to enhance the readiness of local governments to address development challenges and equip them with the resources and expertise needed to achieve sustainable, inclusive progress that meets the needs of Palestinian communities.
